Phillips Exeter Academy, 8:30AM-4:00PM

Exeter, NH (December 6, 2009)—Phillips Exeter Academy will host the New England Women’s Forum, on Sunday, December 13, 2009 as a part of the United Nation’s U.S. Women Connect’s charge to report on the status of women throughout the nation. The New England Women’s Forum, representing six northeastern states ─ Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont ─ will be hearing from girls and women from across the region as they assess the opportunities and challenges faced by women today. Six focus groups will address the critical areas of poverty, health, violence against women, institutional mechanisms, media, and economic justice. During the day-long conference, participants will hear from political, education and community leaders, including the Honorable Madeleine Kunin, former Governor of Vermont; the Honorable Margaret “Maggie” Wood Hassan, New Hampshire Senate Majority Leader; Professor Stephanie Seguino, Associate Dean of Economics, University of Vermont; and Jackie Jenkins-Scott, President, Wheelock College. Roundtable brainstorming sessions will produce short reports for the assembled group outlining views and visions about improving the quality of women’s lives. A final report of compiled assessments will be submitted to U.S. Women Connect for their national report and included in the United Nation’s global assessment on the status of women since 1995.
